The Agency for Agricultural Extension and Human Resources Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Republic of Indonesia presented The workshop Role of Agricultural Extension in Strengthening Agricultural Innovation System. The Workshop conducted on 23 – 27 September 2019 in Melia Purosani Hotel Yogyakarta, with 47 Participants from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, LAO PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philipines, Thailand, and Vietnam as  ASEAN Member States (AMS). The objective of the workshop is to increase agricultural extension workers’ knowledge and to share their precious experiences among ASEAN Member States. Expected outcome is hoped that the participants of the workshop gained and shared their knowledge of Agriculture Information System (AIS) and implemented to their respective countries. The appropriate methods and modern techniques that shared could be implemented and disseminated to the other farmers.

                This Workshop has opened by Secretary of Agricultural Extension and Human Resources Development, Ministry of Agriculture. This Workshop purposed for extension services provided to farmers should be oriented to agribusiness know how and skills for better income and welfare. In order to achieve purpose, agribusiness oriented extension services need to be innovative ensuring that the information and technology introduced to farmers and farmers organization are market driven. In the future, high competitiveness in a global market needs high innovation efforts in agricultural extension services, farmers organization need to be linked with various agribusiness entities from upstream to downstream, and the capacity of extension worker should be improved, including technology transfer and linking farmers with various agribusiness actors/players.  

                The Speakers invited in the workshop are Prof. Dr. Ir. Sunarru Samsi Hariadi Head of the Master and Doctoral Program in Extension and Development Communication, the Graduate School of Gajah Mada University, about  Agricultural Innovation System (AIS) and Its Implications for Demand driven / Market driven Agricultural Extension. Agricultural Innovation System is a network of actors (individual, organizations, and enterprises) together with supporting institutions and policies in the agricultural and related sectors that bring existing or new product, process,  and forms of organization into social and economic use. Policies and intitutions (formal and informal) shape the way that these actors interact, generate, share and use knowledge as well as jointly learn. The AIS comprised of four main components are Research and Education, Business and Enterprises, Bridging Institutions, The Enabling Environment. Agriculutral Extension as bridging institution from research and education to business and enterprises, Agricultural extension worker have to understand condition and situation of enabling environment, Agricultural extension worker have to understand that enabling environment will be related with science actors and technology from other sectors, Agricultural extension worker have to understand development of science and technology policy and also political system.  Another Speakers are Director of National Agriculture Extension Center about Agricultural Extension Policy in Indonesia, Bureau of Planning  Secretariat General of  Agricultural Extension and Human Resources Development, Ministry of Agriculture about  Reform in Agricultural Extension Policy: Implication For Training And Farmer Learning Methodology, Better Rice Initiave Asia about Extension in AIS including ICT and gender nutrition pluralism and farmer participation in action. Last speaker is Mr.Rizal Fahreza as ASEAN Youth Social Entrepreneurs Awardee about Model Of Youth Agroentrepreneurship Citrus Plantation In West Java, Indonesia. Workshop participants were visited the Agricultural Extension Center of Seyegan Subdistrict, Jejamuran Business Process, and Women Farmers Group Bougenville in Pagersari Village, Magelang District. The participants were enthusiastic about this workshop and gained valuable experience in agricultural extension and got new friends among ASEAN members, because Friendship is the most beautiful thing in this world.
